Genetic determinism has a long history and its roots can be traced back to the eugenics movement, which at the beginning of the 20th century polarized the theory of genetics by claiming that a person's destiny is entirely determined by his or her genes, a view that had a profound effect not only on the scientific community but also on the stereotypes that were deeply rooted in society. However, with the development of molecular biology and epigenetics, this single deterministic model has been increasingly challenged. In recent years, the rise of Gene-Environment Interaction (G×E) theory has provided us with a more dynamic and complex perspective on human development. This theory challenges the traditional genetic determinism and emphasizes that gene expression is a continuous and dynamic process that is deeply regulated by environmental factors. Key studies, such as the review by Belsky et al. in Molecular Psychiatry, have systematically demonstrated that so-called "vulnerability genes" may in fact be "plasticity genes," and that an individual's ability to respond to the environment can itself be inherited. This paradigm shift in science provides the theoretical foundation for our study. Through the G×E framework, we no longer view genes as static fate maps, but as dynamically interacting systems whose expression evolves in response to environmental stimuli.

By Challenging the Genetic Determinism, we posed the question:

Can we build an AI Vtuber with gene-environment interaction, and how would revealing its genetic code change user attitudes?

We posed the question: Can we build an AI Vtuber with gene-environment interaction, and how would revealing its genetic code change user attitudes? Our project, SERA, aims to simulate the complex dynamics of gene-environment interaction in real time through the use of an AI Vtuber + Genetic Algorithm, to challenge the genetic determinism, and to use it as a medium of reflection to think about the influence of the public on the growth and expression of the individual.
